Poem: On the Subject of Medicinal Ducklings

What if

Instead of anti-depressants

And blood pressure meds

And statins

And the rest of the list of medical prescriptions

We daily plopped a baby chick in the patient’s open hand

Or let a kitten rest upon their chest

Or placed a puppy in their lap

Or a friendly parakeet upon their shoulder

What smile would naturally occur

And heart rate drop

And pleasure be felt

What if pharmacies came with petting zoos

What if doctors waiting rooms were populated with hamsters

What if the most natural remedy of all

Comes with purrs and cheeps and sniffs

It is complete bunkum

That you can die of a baby animal overdose

Try it today

On you and your loved ones

And then join me

In this medicine revolution!

(We will need cleaners though. Know any good ones?)

The above is a sample of this year’s project to write a poem (almost) every day. I’ll be compiling the results into a collection, so if you want to be kept up to date, sign up to my newsletter or subscribe to this blog using the form below.
